The 30-year journey

What happens, year by year

You start teaching the middle classes, then earn a master's degree and become a PGT for the senior classes. Around year 18 the path splits. Most teachers stay in the classroom, many by choice. A smaller group moves into school leadership: Vice Principal, then Principal.

  1. Year 0–8 Level 7

    Trained Graduate Teacher (TGT)

    ₹44,900 basic · ₹62k–₹72k in-hand

A Kendriya Vidyalaya, teaching classes 6 to 10

You teach one subject to classes 6 to 10, the tough middle years. A KV TGT starts at Level 7, higher than most state-school teachers, with central pay and benefits. The work is full classes, corrections, exam duty and some admin. The vacations are real, but the term-time load is heavy.

  2. Year 8–18 Level 8

    Post Graduate Teacher (PGT)

    ₹47,600 basic · ₹75k–₹88k in-hand

Teaching classes 11 and 12 in a KV

The main promotion in a teaching career, but it needs a master's degree in your subject and a departmental exam. As a PGT you teach the senior classes, 11 and 12, and you're often the subject lead. This is where the path starts to split between staying in the classroom and moving into school leadership.

Year 18 onwards

Two paths

Teaching to the end

Where most KV teachers retire — many by choice

  1. Year 18–34 Level 8

    Senior PGT, teaching

    ₹55,000 basic

Senior subject teacher, board-class results on you

Most KV teachers spend their careers in the classroom, and many are happiest there. As a senior PGT you mentor juniors, lead your subject, and carry the weight of board results. Yearly increments keep the pay rising. Respected, secure, pensioned: a teacher to the end, by choice for many.

Into school leadership

Vice Principal, then Principal

  1. Year 18–26 Level 10

    Vice Principal

    ₹56,100 basic · ₹95k–₹1.15L in-hand

    Second-in-charge of a Kendriya Vidyalaya

Stepping into administration. After six years as a PGT and a promotion exam, you become Vice Principal, running the school's daily working alongside the Principal. The job shifts from teaching to managing teachers, timetables, exams and parents.

Promotion exam + 6 years as PGT.

  2. Year 26–34 Level 12

    Principal

    ₹78,800 basic · ₹1.35L–₹1.5L in-hand

    Head of a Kendriya Vidyalaya

The top of a school career. As Principal you lead a whole Kendriya Vidyalaya: its staff, students, results and reputation. A few go higher still, into KVS regional and head offices as Assistant or Deputy Commissioner. Full pension at the end of a respected career.

    A smaller group reaches here.

Before you commit

Is this your kind of job?

KVS TGT is a teaching life. The salary is good and the vacations are real, but the job is classes, corrections, and students, for thirty years. The question before you prepare for the exam: do you want to teach?

A good sign if…

  • You genuinely like teaching teenagers

TGT means classes 6 to 10, the restless middle years. If standing in front of a class energises you instead of draining you, this is one of the best teaching jobs in India.

  • You know your subject and want to keep learning it

You teach one subject, deeply, for decades. If you love your subject enough to keep it fresh year after year, you'll do well and enjoy it.

  • You're okay being posted anywhere

Kendriya Vidyalayas are everywhere: cities, small towns, remote and border areas. If a new place is an adventure rather than a wound, the transfer life costs you far less.

  • You want security, respect and real breaks

Central pay, a pension, and genuine school vacations. Few jobs combine a stable income with this much time to rest and be with family.

  • You are patient and steady with young people

Doubts, discipline, slow learners, anxious parents. Patience is the daily skill. If you have it, the classroom rewards you every day.

  • You'll do a B.Ed and clear CTET

The job needs teaching qualifications and the CTET. If you'll put in that groundwork, the door to a central-government teaching career opens.

Think twice if…

  • You want to stay in one city

The all-India transfer policy can move you far, and you can't claim a location as a right. If roots in one place matter most, weigh this hard.

  • You want a fast-rising, high-paying career

Teacher pay is good and secure, but it rises slowly, and the big jumps — Vice Principal, Principal — are few and come late. This is a calling, not a fast climb.

  • Standing in front of a class drains you

If managing thirty teenagers all day sounds exhausting rather than meaningful, no amount of pay or holidays will make this job sit right.

  • You think it is easy work with long holidays

The vacations are real, but term-time is full classes, corrections, exam duties and paperwork. Go in respecting the work, not just the breaks.

KVS TGT is one of the best teaching careers in India: central pay, a genuine school calendar, and a clear path to PGT and school leadership for those who want it. The cost is the all-India transfer policy. If the left column is you, the trade is fair. If a desk and a fixed city matter more than a classroom, SSC CGL gives you a central-government career without the transfers or the teaching.

What nobody tells you

The cost of the job

Pay is easy to look up. The other costs aren't. Here's what you take on when you take this job.

You can be posted anywhere in India

KVS has an all-India transfer policy. You can be moved to a remote town or a border area, and you cannot claim your preferred city as a right. Spouse's work and children's schooling absorb the cost.

Climbing past TGT needs a master’s and an exam

The step to PGT needs a post-graduate degree in your subject and a departmental exam. Without it, you may teach as a TGT for many years while only increments and MACP lift your pay.

Most teachers stay teachers

Vice Principal and Principal posts are few, and need years of experience and more exams. Most KV teachers retire from the classroom, well paid and respected, but never in administration.

Teaching is real work, vacations or not

The long holidays are genuine, but term-time means full classes, lesson prep, corrections, exam and invigilation duty, and parent meetings. The job asks for energy every single school day.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

What is the salary of a KVS TGT in 2026?
₹62,000–₹72,000 per month in hand at Level 7, on central government pay, higher than most state school teaching jobs, with the same DA revisions central employees get.
What are the eligibility requirements for KVS TGT?
A bachelor's degree in the relevant subject, a B.Ed, and a valid CTET pass, all three before you apply. Selection is through the KVS recruitment exam and interview.
Are KVS teachers transferred across India?
Yes. Kendriya Vidyalayas exist in every corner of the country and you can be posted to any of them. KVS has a structured, points-based transfer policy, but an all-India transfer liability is part of the deal.
What is the promotion path for a KVS TGT?
PGT around years 8–18 (a departmental shift, not a new public exam), then either senior PGT teaching till retirement or the leadership route: Vice Principal around years 18–26 and Principal by 26–34.
Do KVS teachers really get school vacations?
Yes. Genuine summer and winter breaks, a rarity in government jobs. Some vacation days can be called back for duties, but the working calendar is still far lighter than any office posting.
