Clear the NDA at 16 or 17, train for four years, and be commissioned an officer at 21. Everything up to Lieutenant Colonel then comes on time served. What happens after that is decided by a selection board, and the officers it passes over reach Colonel thirteen years later than the ones it does not.

Clear the CDS after your degree and you are commissioned an officer at 22 or 23. Which academy you are sent to decides the rest: IMA, INA and AFA lead to a permanent commission and a pension, while OTA is ten years, extendable to fourteen, with a gratuity at the end and no pension. Of the 451 seats in the current notification, 293 are OTA.

Clear the AFCAT and you can be flying for the Indian Air Force in your early twenties, on pay that beats every other officer entry because of a ₹25,000 flying allowance. Then read the commission: through this exam the Flying Branch is fourteen years, no extension, no pension. The Ground Duty branches are where the pensionable career sits.

RRB NTPC
Clear the RRB NTPC and you join Indian Railways as a graduate. Which of the six posts you get is decided by your rank, and the odds are not what most candidates assume: three in five become a Goods Train Manager out on the freight network, while Station Master, the post the exam is famous for, is about one seat in nine.

RRB ALP
Clear the RRB ALP with an ITI or an engineering diploma and you start in the cab at Level 2, ₹19,900 basic, which is the lowest entry on this site. What changes the arithmetic is running allowance: loco staff earn by the kilometre, and the rate rises with the class of train you are trusted with. What it costs is a life run by the crew booking office rather than a roster.

RRB Group D
More than a crore people registered for about 32,000 posts, which is roughly 334 candidates for every seat, and the entry requirement is Class 10. What waits at the end is Level 1, ₹18,000 basic, and for the largest single post it is work on live track. The railway prices that danger at ₹2,700 a month, which tells you most of what you need to know.

SBI Clerk
Every banking map on this site so far has been an officer post. This is the clerical one, and it is the one most people enter on. The pay is decent and the ladder out of it is real, but the fork is not where you think: it is decided in your first year, by whether you sit two professional exams that nobody makes you sit.

IBPS RRB Officer Scale I
An RRB officer starts on ₹48,480 basic. So does an SBI PO, and so does an IBPS PO, on the same bipartite settlement, rung for rung up the first three grades. Nothing about this choice is a trade of money. It is a choice about staying in one state, in a rural branch, in a much smaller bank, and one line in the eligibility conditions makes that choice for you.

NABARD Grade A
Every other banking map here is about an institution that takes deposits and lends to customers. NABARD does neither. It refinances the banks that lend to farmers and supervises the rural banks that do it, so the work is appraisal, sanction and inspection rather than a counter. The intake is in double figures nationally, and the exam takes Agriculture and Rural Development seriously enough that general banking preparation will not carry you.

SEBI Grade A
The entry basic is ₹62,500, above every commercial banking door and below RBI Grade B. What separates it is not the money. It is that the work is surveillance, inspection, enforcement and policy in the securities market, which suits a lawyer, an accountant or an analyst more than a banker, and that the intake is around a hundred posts in a cycle whose date nobody can predict.
