RRB NTPC — one exam, six jobs, and the one everybody pictures is the one almost nobody gets

Clear the RRB NTPC and you join Indian Railways as a graduate. Which of the six posts you get is decided by your rank, and the odds are not what most candidates assume: three in five become a Goods Train Manager out on the freight network, while Station Master, the post the exam is famous for, is about one seat in nine.

The 30-year journey

What happens, year by year

This is one exam that leads to six different jobs, in the way SSC CGL does. You do not apply for a post so much as earn a rank, state preferences, and take what the merit list gives you. The gap between what candidates picture and what the vacancy table says is the widest of any exam on this site, so the honest way to read this map is to start with the split rather than the salary.

  1. Year 0 CBT

    Clearing the exam

    Two computer-based tests, then a post-specific test

CBT 1 is 100 questions in 90 minutes on general awareness, mathematics and reasoning. CBT 2 follows at 120 marks in the same time and counts for more. A third of a mark comes off for every wrong answer at both stages, so the guessing that works on some exams costs you here. After that the test depends on the post: an aptitude test for Station Master and Traffic Assistant, a typing test at 30 words a minute in English or 25 in Hindi for the typist posts.

  2. Year 0 Rank

The allotment, and what the odds are

Your rank and your preferences, against the zone-wise vacancy table

Six posts share 5,810 graduate seats. Goods Train Manager takes 3,416 of them, so three in five successful candidates end up there. Junior Accounts Assistant is 921 and Senior Clerk 628. Station Master, the post this exam is known for, is 615, about one seat in nine, and it carries the aptitude test the others do not. Chief Commercial cum Ticket Supervisor is 161 and Traffic Assistant 59. If you are preparing for this exam with a station platform in mind, that table is the thing to read first.

After the merit list

Two kinds of railway job

Goods Train Manager

3,416 of 5,810 seats. Running staff on the freight network

  1. Year 0–5 L5

    Goods Train Manager

₹29,200 basic · ₹45k–₹52k, plus running allowance in-hand Running staff draw running allowance calculated on kilometres worked, reported at about ₹4.63 per km for a goods guard. Thirty per cent of it is treated as a pay element for other calculations. That closes part of the gap to Level 6, through kilometres rather than through rank.

Freight trains across your zone, working from out-stations and running rooms

This is the freight guard's job under its modern name. You are responsible for the train: its brake power, its documentation, its safe movement through sections and its protection if something goes wrong. The work is out on the network rather than at a station, the hours follow the train rather than a roster you would recognise, and you sleep in running rooms away from home. Look closely at the pay line, because it is the map's sharpest point: Level 5 sits one level below the Station Master you were probably hoping for.

Needs the merit list, 59% of seats.

  2. Year 5–15 L6

Senior Goods Train Manager, then passenger and mail links

₹35,400 basic · ₹54k–₹62k, plus running allowance in-hand Per-rung timings and the exact senior designations on the guard ladder are not sourced in this draft. Verify before publishing any year range on this path.

Better links, and eventually passenger and mail or express rakes

Seniority moves you up the link structure, and the move from freight to passenger and then mail or express work is the one that changes both your pay and your nights. The running allowance rate rises with the class of train, so the same promotion pays twice.

Needs seniority and the link structure.

The desk posts

Accounts, clerical and commercial. About 1,710 seats between them

  1. Year 0–8 L5

Junior Accounts Assistant or Senior Clerk

    ₹29,200 basic

A divisional or zonal office, or a commercial post at a station

The same Level 5 basic as a Goods Train Manager, office hours, and no running allowance, which is the whole trade. You handle railway accounts, establishment work or commercial and ticketing, and the typing test you sat turns out to be part of the daily work. It is the most ordinary of the six outcomes and the one most likely to suit somebody who wants a settled life around the work.

  2. Year 8–20 L6+

    Senior supervisory grades

₹35,400 basic Per-post promotion ladders for the accounts, clerical and commercial streams are not researched in this draft. Either source them or keep this path at the level it is written at.

Section in charge in an accounts, personnel or commercial branch

The clerical and accounts ladders climb through departmental exams and seniority into supervisory grades. This draft does not trace them rung by rung because the sources we could reach do not, and inventing a ladder for a map about honest odds would be a poor way to start.

Before you commit

Is this your kind of job?

Most people decide about this exam by reading the salary and the syllabus. Both are the easy part. The decision that will matter is whether you would be content with the job the odds are most likely to hand you, because you do not get to choose it and three in five candidates get the same one.

A good sign if…

  • You want the railway itself, not one particular post

People who join wanting to work for Indian Railways tend to settle wherever the merit list puts them. People who join wanting to be a Station Master specifically have a one-in-nine chance of that and a long career if it misses.

  • Running duty sounds like the appeal, not the cost

The freight guard's job is out on the network, away from home, on the train's schedule. If that reads as the interesting version of a railway job rather than the punishing one, the majority outcome suits you.

  • A graduate degree and a government post is the goal

Level 5 or 6 with a pension, a transfer network across the country and railway medical cover is a solid outcome for a graduate, and it arrives without a professional degree behind it.

  • You can take an exam that punishes guessing

A third of a mark off for a wrong answer, across two stages, with the second weighted heavier. Accuracy is worth more here than coverage.

Think twice if…

  • Station Master is the whole reason you are applying

615 seats of 5,810, plus an aptitude test the other posts do not sit. If that is the only outcome you would be happy with, read our Station Master map for what the job is, then decide whether the other five outcomes are acceptable.

  • You need to know your posting and your hours in advance

You state preferences; the merit list decides. Zone, post and whether your life runs on a roster, a link or office hours are all settled after the result rather than before the application.

  • You are comparing the pay against a private graduate job

Level 5 at ₹29,200 basic is security rather than money. For a graduate weighing this against a private-sector start, the case here is the pension, the medical cover and the fact that the job does not disappear, not the salary.

  • Nights away from home would not work for your family

The majority post is running staff. Out-stations, running rooms and duty that follows the train are the ordinary shape of it, not the exception.

RRB NTPC is one of the widest graduate doors into a government job in India, and the exam is winnable with disciplined accuracy. Judge it on the vacancy table rather than the job title: three in five successful candidates become a Goods Train Manager, on a level below the Station Master post the exam is famous for, and they make part of that back in kilometres run. If the freight network sounds like the interesting version of railway work, this is a good career and an honest one. If only the station will do, our Station Master map is the one to read, and this exam is a one-in-nine bet on it.

What nobody tells you

The cost of the job

Pay is easy to look up. The other costs aren't. Here's what you take on when you take this job.

Three in five get the freight guard's job

Goods Train Manager is 3,416 of 5,810 graduate seats. Station Master is 615. The exam is known for the second and mostly delivers the first, and the two are different lives: one runs with the train and sleeps in running rooms, the other runs a station on a roster. Neither is worse. Only one of them is what most candidates are picturing.

The majority post sits a level lower

Goods Train Manager is reported at Level 5, ₹29,200, while Station Master is Level 6, ₹35,400. So the post most people get pays less basic than the post most people want. Running allowance on kilometres worked closes part of that, at about ₹4.63 per km for a goods guard, which means the gap narrows through distance covered rather than through rank held.

The post decides whether you have a roster or a link

Accounts, clerical and commercial posts are office work with a typing test that turns out to be part of the job. Goods Train Manager is running staff. Station Master is shift work at a station and carries an aptitude test the others do not sit. One exam, and the difference between these lives is decided by your rank in it.

Not the NTPC you may be thinking of

RRB NTPC means Non-Technical Popular Categories in Indian Railways. NTPC Ltd is the power company, and the graduate route into it is a different exam with different pay, covered in our PSU Executive Trainee map. The two share three letters and nothing else.

What each of the two outcomes pays, in today's rupees.

7th CPC pay matrix, DA @ 60%, X-city HRA, after NPS. Running allowance for the running-staff path is described but not added into the figures, because it depends on kilometres worked.. The two columns start on different levels, which is the unusual part: the path most candidates land on begins lower. Running allowance is what closes the gap, and it is earned by distance rather than granted by grade, so it does not appear in a pay matrix at all. 7th-CPC DA revises about every six months. We update this every year.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Which post do most RRB NTPC graduate candidates actually get?
Goods Train Manager. It is 3,416 of the 5,810 graduate seats, so about three in five successful candidates end up there. Station Master, which the exam is best known for, is 615 seats, roughly one in nine, and it carries an aptitude test the other posts do not.
What is the salary of an RRB NTPC graduate post?
Level 5 at ₹29,200 basic or Level 6 at ₹35,400, depending on the post. With DA at 60% that works out to roughly ₹45,000 to ₹62,000 in hand. Running staff, including Goods Train Managers, also draw running allowance calculated on kilometres worked, which the desk posts do not.
Is RRB NTPC the same as NTPC Limited?
No. RRB NTPC stands for Non-Technical Popular Categories in Indian Railways. NTPC Limited is the power generation company, and the graduate route into it runs through a different exam entirely, which our PSU Executive Trainee map covers.
What is the RRB NTPC exam pattern?
CBT 1 is 100 questions for 100 marks in 90 minutes, covering general awareness, mathematics and reasoning. CBT 2 is 120 marks in 90 minutes and carries more weight. Both deduct a third of a mark for a wrong answer. After that comes an aptitude test for Station Master and Traffic Assistant, or a typing test at 30 words a minute in English or 25 in Hindi for the typist posts, then document verification and a medical.
Can I choose which NTPC post I get?
You state preferences, but the merit list and the zone-wise vacancy table decide. Since one post accounts for 59% of the seats, the honest way to plan is to assume the majority outcome and check that you would be content with it.
