SEBI Grade A — a regulator's job, filed under banking, that almost nothing about banking prepares you for

The entry basic is ₹62,500, above every commercial banking door and below RBI Grade B. What separates it is not the money. It is that the work is surveillance, inspection, enforcement and policy in the securities market, which suits a lawyer, an accountant or an analyst more than a banker, and that the intake is around a hundred posts in a cycle whose date nobody can predict.

Starting Grade
Grade A (Assistant Manager), ₹62,500 basic A figure of ₹44,500 circulates for this post and it is wrong. That is NABARD Grade A's entry basic. SEBI revised its pay and the entry is ₹62,500.
Starting In-hand

Office hours on inspection, surveillance and case work, with filing deadlines
Best For
A lawyer, accountant, analyst or IT specialist who wants to regulate a market rather than work in it

The 30-year journey

What happens, year by year

Start with two corrections, because both are common and both change the decision. The first is that SEBI Grade A starts on ₹62,500, not the ₹44,500 that circulates on aspirant forums. That lower figure belongs to NABARD. The second is the direction people usually get wrong: SEBI is not the best-paid apex entry. RBI Grade B starts higher, at ₹78,450, and runs a larger and more regular intake. So a candidate optimising for money and odds should sit RBI, and sit SEBI as well rather than instead. What makes SEBI a different career, and worth its own map, is the work. This is a regulator. The job is watching a market, inspecting the firms inside it, building cases against the ones breaking the rules, and drafting the rules themselves.

  1. Year 0 Exam

The exam, and the stream you choose

Two written phases, with a stream paper in phase II, then an interview

SEBI recruits in streams: General, Legal, Information Technology, Research, Official Language, and in some cycles Engineering. Your stream decides your paper, your competition and often your department afterwards, and it matters far more to your odds than the headline vacancy total does. That total is worth handling carefully too. The 135-post figure that circulates belongs to a previous cycle. When this map was drafted, SEBI's own recruitment page listed an Executive Director post and a contract security role and no Grade A advertisement at all.

  2. Year 0–4 Grade A

    Assistant Manager, Grade A

₹62,500 basic · ₹1.43L–₹1.84L gross in-hand The gross range turns on leased accommodation rather than on performance or posting seniority. ₹1.43 lakh and ₹1.84 lakh are closer to two different housing arrangements than to a career band.

A department at the Mumbai head office

The money is the part everyone knows and the work is the part almost nobody describes. An Assistant Manager reads filings, runs surveillance alerts against trading patterns, inspects intermediaries, drafts show-cause notices, and works on the consultation papers that become regulations. It rewards people who like reading documents closely and following an inconsistency until it resolves. If your picture of finance involves markets in the sense of trading them, this is the other side of the glass, and the two are not the same job at all.

Across a career

Two kinds of regulator

Surveillance and enforcement

Watching the market, inspecting firms, building cases

  1. Year On promotion Grade B

    Manager, Grade B

₹78,000 basic · Not sourced in-hand Neither the timing of this promotion nor the mechanism is sourced, and the basic shown is a point on the published scale rather than a stated Grade B entry figure.

Leading an inspection or a case team

On the enforcement side, Grade B usually means owning cases rather than supporting them. Inspections of intermediaries, investigations that run for months, and adjudication files that end in orders published under your department's name. The appeal is unusually concrete for a government job: the output is a public document with consequences attached. When this promotion arrives is not something any source we reached publishes, so this map shows no year on it.

    By seniority and internal selection.

Policy and regulation

Drafting the rules the market operates under

  1. Year On promotion Grade C

    Deputy General Manager, Grade C

    ₹98,000 basic

    A policy or market-regulation department

The policy side runs to the same grades on different work. Consultation papers, amendments to regulations, and the committee work that sits behind them. This is where a SEBI career stops resembling any bank job at all, because the output is the rulebook rather than a transaction. For a Legal-stream entrant in particular, it is a plausible reason to choose the regulator over practice or over a firm.

  2. Year Later career Grade D → E → ED

General Manager, Chief General Manager, Executive Director

    ₹1,26,100 basic

Heading a department, then a division

Above Grade C the ladder runs Grade D, Grade E and then Executive Director. That last post is not theoretical: SEBI was advertising an Executive Director vacancy on its own recruitment page while this map was being drafted, which is a useful reminder that the top of this chart is a job the organisation fills rather than a decoration on a diagram. The published scale reaches ₹1,26,100 over seventeen years, which describes the entry scale rather than the ceiling of the service.

Before you commit

Is this your kind of job?

This one turns on discipline rather than ambition. The pay and the prestige attract a very wide field, and the work suits a narrow one: people who are comfortable spending a career reading, checking and writing about other people's conduct.

A good sign if…

  • You are a lawyer, accountant, analyst or IT specialist

The stream structure means a professional qualification is an advantage rather than a footnote. Legal, Research and IT streams recruit for what those people already know, which very few government exams do.

  • Reading documents closely is the part of work you like

Filings, disclosures, trading patterns and rulebooks. If following an inconsistency until it resolves is satisfying rather than tedious, this is one of the few careers built entirely out of that.

  • You want the output to be public

Orders, consultation papers and regulations carry the institution's name and sit in the open. Compared with most government work, the consequence of what you did is unusually visible.

  • Mumbai suits you

The head office and the bulk of the work are there. For a candidate who wants to be in the financial capital, the concentration that makes this a hard posting for others is the attraction.

Think twice if…

  • You need a predictable exam calendar

When this map was drafted, SEBI's own recruitment page carried no Grade A advertisement, and the 135-post figure being quoted around it belonged to an earlier cycle. There is no annual date to plan around.

  • You want to be posted near home

This is a Mumbai career with a handful of regional offices. It is close to the opposite of an IBPS RRB posting, and a reader choosing between the two is really choosing between a city and a state.

  • You wanted to work in markets rather than watch them

A regulator sits on the other side. The skills overlap and the day does not, and someone who came for the market itself will find the distance frustrating.

  • You are treating this as the highest-paying apex exam

It is not. RBI Grade B starts higher at ₹78,450 with a larger and more regular intake. If pay and odds are what you are optimising, sit RBI first and treat SEBI as an additional attempt rather than a better one.

SEBI Grade A is the securities regulator's door, and the two things most often said about it are both wrong. It does not start at ₹44,500, which is NABARD's number, and it is not the best-paid apex entry, because RBI Grade B starts higher and recruits more regularly. What is true is that it pays ₹62,500 into a gross well over a lakh, that the intake is around a hundred posts across all streams in a cycle nobody can date, and that the work is inspection, enforcement and rule-writing rather than banking. Choose it if you are a professional whose stream is recruited for and the idea of regulating a market appeals more than working inside one. Do not choose it as a better-paid RBI, because that is not what it is.

What nobody tells you

The cost of the job

Pay is easy to look up. The other costs aren't. Here's what you take on when you take this job.

Two wrong numbers follow this exam around

The first is ₹44,500, which belongs to NABARD Grade A. SEBI starts at ₹62,500. The second is the idea that this is the top of the apex tier on pay, when RBI Grade B starts higher at ₹78,450. Both mistakes push candidates into the wrong preparation order.

There may be no exam this year, and there is no way to know

SEBI's own recruitment page carried no Grade A advertisement when this map was drafted, only an Executive Director post and a contract security role. The 135 vacancies being quoted belong to a previous cycle. A candidate cannot build a two-year plan around a date that does not exist yet.

Your stream matters more than the total

General, Legal, IT, Research and Official Language are recruited separately and the split is not published. Two people reading the same vacancy number are facing completely different competitions, and the one that matters to you is the one nobody prints.

The gross range is a housing decision, not a career band

₹1.43 lakh to ₹1.84 lakh looks like a progression and is closer to two different accommodation arrangements. Anyone quoting the top of that range as the starting package has picked the most flattering reading without saying so.

The published Grade A scale of ₹62,500 rising to ₹1,26,100 over seventeen years, with allowances as reported. Grade-wise entry basics above Grade A are not published in any source we reached, so later rows take points on the published scale.. Only the Grade A scale is documented in detail; the grades above it are named in the organisation chart without published entry figures or timings. The two columns are the enforcement and policy sides of the same institution rather than two formal tracks, and no year ranges appear because no promotion timings are published. COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

What is the salary of a SEBI Grade A officer?
Basic pay is ₹62,500, rising to ₹1,26,100 over seventeen years. Gross runs about ₹1.43 lakh to ₹1.84 lakh a month, and the width of that range is mostly about whether leased accommodation is taken rather than about seniority.
Is SEBI Grade A basic pay ₹44,500?
No. ₹44,500 is NABARD Grade A's entry basic and the two are often confused. SEBI revised its pay and the entry basic is ₹62,500.
Does SEBI Grade A pay more than RBI Grade B?
No. RBI Grade B starts at ₹78,450 against SEBI's ₹62,500, and RBI also runs a larger and more regular intake. If pay and odds are what you are weighing, RBI comes first and SEBI is worth sitting as well rather than instead.
When is the next SEBI Grade A notification?
Unknown. SEBI's own recruitment page carried no Officer Grade A advertisement when this map was drafted, and the 135 vacancies widely quoted belong to a previous cycle. The cycles are irregular, which is a real planning cost compared with the annual banking exams.
What does a SEBI Grade A officer do?
Regulatory work in the securities market. Reading filings and disclosures, running surveillance on trading patterns, inspecting intermediaries, drafting show-cause notices and adjudication orders, and working on the consultation papers that become regulations. It suits a lawyer, accountant, analyst or IT specialist more than a banker.

Other jobs to compare

Trying to decide between options?

A SEBI aspirant is nearly always holding two or three of these at once, so the comparisons are about order of preference rather than either-or.

SEBI's own recruitment page was read during this research and showed no live Officer Grade A advertisement, so the widely quoted 135 vacancies belong to a previous cycle and this map is written without a cycle attached. The ₹62,500 entry basic, the ₹1,26,100 ceiling of the entry scale and the gross range come from coaching coverage rather than a SEBI pay order. Promotion timings and grade-wise entry basics above Grade A are not published in any source we reached, so the ladder carries no year ranges and later salary rows are points on the entry scale. The enforcement and policy columns are our framing of SEBI's functions, not two formal career tracks. Not legal or financial advice.
