Every banking map on this site so far has been an officer post. This is the clerical one, and it is the one most people enter on. The pay is decent and the ladder out of it is real, but the fork is not where you think: it is decided in your first year, by whether you sit two professional exams that nobody makes you sit.

What happens, year by year
The clerical cadre gets written about as the consolation prize for people who did not clear a PO exam. That is a bad way to look at it, because the thing that decides how this career goes is not the exam you came in through. It is a choice you make in the first year, quietly, about whether to sit two banking exams that nobody requires and nobody reminds you about. Clear both and you can sit the internal officer exam after three years. Clear neither and you wait six. Sit nothing at all and the normal track takes twelve.

Two written stages and then a language test, and the language test is the part that shapes the career. You apply to a circle, you are tested in that circle's language, and you are broadly going to serve there. Most banking exams move you around the country and treat that as the price of entry. This one does the opposite, and for a great many candidates it is the whole reason to prefer it. The current advertisement is CRPD/CR/2026-27/17, carrying 7,680 regular vacancies with a further 2,086 listed as backlog.

A branch counter, in the circle you applied to
The work is the counter and everything behind it: account opening, cash, passbooks, deposits, and the customers attached to all of it. The pay scale runs from ₹24,050 to ₹64,480, and graduates are reported to start above the floor because two advance increments are admissible. It is a decent living close to home with a pension behind it. The thing worth knowing on day one is that this is also the year you should be enrolling for JAIIB, because that decision is worth three years of your career and it does not feel like it at the time.

Officer work at a branch, then a manager's desk on absorption
With JAIIB and CAIIB behind you, three years of service is enough to sit the internal written exam and interview for Trainee Officer. Clear it and there is a two-year probation, and at the end of that you are absorbed into MMGS-II, which is a grade above where a directly recruited PO starts. That is the best outcome available anywhere in this map and it is reached by someone who joined as a clerk. It is also the route with a real risk attached, and the map would be dishonest not to name it.

Junior management at a branch
The second fast route does not need the professional exams. Six years of service, an internal competitive exam, an interview and an appraisal record, and you are a JMGS-I officer. This is the same grade a directly recruited probationary officer joins on, reached six years later but without the officer exam and without leaving home. For someone who did not clear a PO exam and did not want to move cities, that is a fair trade rather than a compromise.

If the professional exams never happen and the fast-track exams are not attempted, there is still a route. Twelve years of service, then an internal exam and interview. It arrives at the same grade the fast track reaches in three to six years, which is the clearest possible argument for enrolling in JAIIB in your first year. Nothing about the normal track is a failure, and a lot of people have good careers on it. It is simply nine years slower for a decision that costs two exams.

Above JMGS-I the ladder is the same one every SBI officer climbs: MMGS-II, MMGS-III, then the senior grades. Someone who entered as a clerk and moved across at three years has effectively the same runway as a PO who joined at the same age. Someone who crossed at twelve has a shorter one, and will usually finish a grade or two lower. The bank does not hold your entry against you, but arithmetic does.

Two things decide whether this is the right door. The first is whether staying in one state matters more to you than starting a grade higher. The second is whether you are the kind of person who will sit a professional exam in your first year of work, when nobody is asking you to and the counter is busy.

Recruitment is circle-wise and language-tested, so the state you apply in is broadly the state you serve in. Almost no other banking entry offers that, and for a lot of people it is worth more than a starting grade.

Someone who stays in the clerical cadre for a career tops out at ₹64,480, a scale a PO passes through on the way up. The ladder out exists precisely so that this does not have to be the ending, but it has to be taken.
The clerical cadre is the widest door into the country's largest bank and the only banking entry on this site that lets you build a career in your own state. Treated as a destination it is a solid, secure job with a ceiling. Treated as an entrance it is one of the better deals in Indian banking, because three years of service with JAIIB and CAIIB behind it opens an internal route that ends in MMGS-II. What decides which version you get is not the entrance exam. It is whether you enrol for a professional exam in your first year at the counter, which is the least dramatic and most consequential decision in this map.

JAIIB and CAIIB are not required to join and not required to stay. They are the difference between sitting the internal officer exam at three years and sitting it at six, and between that and the twelve-year normal track. Two exams, nine years. Nobody tells you this at the counter.
The circle keeps you home, and keeps you there
Recruitment is circle-wise with a local language test, so you serve broadly where you applied. That is the strongest argument for this entry over a PO exam and it is the same fact that limits it. Both readings are correct and which one applies is about your life, not the job.
The fast track can send you back
A Trainee Officer serves a two-year probation and is absorbed into MMGS-II on performance in a final interview. Sources consistently say that failing it returns you to the clerical cadre. That condition needs confirming against the promotion policy, and until it is, treat the fastest route as the one with a real downside rather than a free option.

The same advertisement is described as 7,680 posts, as 9,124 and as 9,766. The first is the regular count, and 2,086 backlog posts are listed separately. Read the advertisement rather than a headline, because the number you are competing against is not the one in most articles.
